A well-fitting bra should feel supportive without digging, gaping or riding up. The best starting point is to measure yourself, compare those measurements with the brand’s size guidance, and then check how the bra sits once it is on.
Start with your underband
The band provides much of a bra’s support. It should sit level around your body and feel secure on the loosest hook when the bra is new. If it rides up at the back, feels very loose or shifts as you move, the band may be too large.
Check the cups
Your breast tissue should sit comfortably inside the cups without spilling over the top or sides. Gaping can mean the cup is too large, while overflow, flattening or a centre panel that does not sit comfortably may indicate that you need a larger cup or a different shape.
Look at the straps
Straps should stay in place without carrying all the weight of the bra. If they leave deep marks, tighten or loosen them gently and re-check the band fit before changing size.
Remember that brands and styles vary
A balconette, plunge and soft-cup bra can fit differently even in the same labelled size. Use your usual size as a starting point, then compare the product details and fit notes before ordering.
