Stockings, tights and hold-ups can create very different looks, but the practical differences are just as important as the styling. Choosing the right hosiery starts with how you want it to sit on the body, what you are wearing over it and how much support or coverage you prefer.
Stockings
Traditional stockings finish at the thigh and are normally worn with a suspender belt to keep them securely in place. They can be a useful choice when you want the look of hosiery without fabric extending over the waist. When shopping, check whether a suspender belt is included or sold separately.
Hold-ups
Hold-ups also finish at the thigh, but they are designed to stay in place without a suspender belt, usually with supportive bands at the top. Fit around the thigh is particularly important: too loose and they may slip, while a band that feels excessively tight is unlikely to be comfortable for long wear.
Tights
Tights extend from the feet through to the waist, giving continuous coverage. They can be a simple option under dresses and skirts, especially when you prefer a secure, all-in-one feel. Waist height, fabric weight and finish can all affect how they sit beneath clothing.
Think about colour and finish
Black hosiery can create a defined or evening look, while skin-tone and lighter shades can feel more understated. Sheer finishes tend to look lighter, while more opaque styles give stronger coverage. Patterned, seamed and lace-detailed styles make more of a statement, so consider how much of the hosiery will be visible with your outfit.
Choose the right size
Hosiery sizing can differ from normal clothing sizing and may use height, weight or manufacturer-specific ranges. Always check the size information for the individual product rather than relying only on your usual dress size. A good fit helps the fabric sit evenly and reduces unnecessary strain on delicate fibres.
