Delicate lingerie is made to sit close to the body, so it is washed frequently and can experience more wear than many other garments. A little care with washing, drying and storage can help preserve shape, stretch and decorative details for longer.
Start with the care label
The garment’s own care label should always come first. Fabrics, elastics, lace, padding and embellishments can have different requirements, so avoid applying one washing routine to every piece in your drawer.
Wash gently
If the care label allows it, hand washing is a gentle option for bras, lace and more delicate pieces. Use cool or lukewarm water and a mild detergent, and avoid aggressive rubbing or wringing. If machine washing is permitted, a lingerie bag and a delicate cycle can help reduce snagging and tangling.
Fasten hooks before washing
Closing bra hooks and similar fastenings before washing can help stop them catching on lace, mesh or other garments. Keeping delicate pieces together in a wash bag also reduces friction with heavier items such as denim, towels and clothing with zips.
Be careful with heat
High heat can be hard on elastic and delicate fibres. Follow the care label when drying and, where appropriate, allow lingerie to air dry naturally rather than placing it in a tumble dryer. Avoid twisting padded cups to remove water, as this can affect their shape.
Store bras without crushing the cups
Moulded and padded bras benefit from being stored with their cups kept in their natural shape. Lay them in a drawer rather than folding one cup into the other. Softer non-moulded pieces can usually be folded more easily, provided hooks and embellishments are not catching on neighbouring garments.
Rotate everyday favourites
If possible, alternate between several bras rather than wearing the same one continuously. Giving elastic time to recover between wears can help maintain the feel of the band and straps. How often a garment needs washing will depend on wear, activity and its care instructions.
