Bridal Lingerie Guide: What to Wear Under Your Wedding Dress

The right bridal lingerie should work quietly with your dress: supporting the silhouette, sitting smoothly beneath the fabric and feeling comfortable from the ceremony through to the last dance. The best choice depends less on tradition and more on the cut, structure and fabric of your wedding outfit.

Start with the dress, not the lingerie

Before choosing a bra, corset or shapewear, look at the neckline, back, waistline and fabric of your dress. A low back, strapless neckline or very close-fitting fabric can change what works underneath. If possible, take your chosen lingerie to a dress fitting so you can see the full effect together.

Choose support that suits the neckline

For dresses with more coverage, a well-fitting bra in the right shape may be all you need. Strapless or lower-cut styles can call for a different construction. Rather than forcing a favourite bra to work with the dress, choose a style designed to sit discreetly beneath it and check that the band and cups still feel secure.

Think about the fabric

Fine satin, crepe and other smooth fabrics can reveal seams and heavy detailing more easily than lace or structured layers. If a clean finish matters, look for smoother edges and fewer raised details. With fuller or textured fabrics, you may have more freedom to choose decorative pieces.

Use shapewear for the finish you want

Shapewear is optional, not essential. If you enjoy a more streamlined feel beneath a fitted dress, choose a piece that feels supportive rather than restrictive. Your normal size is usually a better starting point than deliberately sizing down, which can create discomfort or visible lines.

Comfort matters for a long day

Wear your chosen lingerie at home before the wedding day. Sit, walk and move in it for a while so you can check straps, fastenings, seams and support. If something irritates you after twenty minutes, it is unlikely to feel better after several hours.
